Autumn Drive
I drove home,
on an autumnal afternoon,
I was deep in thought,
about all the bad things in my life.
About growing old, and
being alone.
The general state of humanity.
When driving, I saw
a young boy bouncing a basketball,
up and down the sidewalk with
an elderly man.
Then felt a little okay again.
Soon after was I stuck,
behind a beat-up pickup truck.
I was annoyed by traffic
and other thoughts.
When I noticed in the cab,
two lovers rubbing shoulders, and
I smiled once again.
Closer to home I saw,
a man so consistent,
watering his lawn.
And the sun shown down,
on him and the street,
between browned leaves,
and for a brief moment,
I felt relieved.
